First Place Winner – Gia, benefiting MisPits and Friends
“When my Olde English Bulldog passed away unexpectedly during a routine dental exam, I was devastated. It took me almost a year before I felt ready to open my heart and home to another dog. I found myself starting to browse online pictures of shelter and rescue dogs needing forever homes. One day a post by MisPits and Friends caught my eye. They had taken in a stray pregnant momma dog and her male dog companion from the Appalachian mountains of E. Kentucky. “Momma Sundae” gave birth to 5 healthy pups in rescue, and they were named after several of Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Flavors! When I saw little “Cherry Garcia’s” picture, I just knew I wanted to adopt her. When I was chosen to be Cherry Garcia’s mom, I felt like I had won the lottery! Cherry Garcia became my “Gia”.
The past few years I have driven from my home in Louisville, KY to Pittsburgh, PA once a month to visit and help my aging parents and disabled brother. This spring, after several months in hospice, my dad passed away. Gia is a high-energy pup who does not allow me to wallow in my grief or tire from my increasing family responsibilities. Instead: she keeps me off the couch and moving forward with an important purpose: to play endless games of fetch with her in the backyard and to laugh and smile at her fearless acrobatic catches! Her joy is contagious and my heart is full. Thank you, Gia, for your unconditional love.”
Second Place Winner – K9 Rocky, benefiting The Humane Society for Greater Savannah
“After being adopted from the Humane Society for Greater Savannah, Rocky became the first dog to ever work for the Tybee Island Police Department! Of course, he isn’t your typical police dog. Instead of sniffing out bombs, drugs, or bad guys, Rocky’s whole job is to make people smile!
While serving as a Public Relations K9, Rocky has visited community events, schools, churches, nursing homes, and even a radio station! When he’s not making celebrity appearances, Rocky can often be found on patrol around the island, conducting pop up meet-and-greets on the street! In his spare time, Rocky raises awareness and donations for various charities to include Oatland Island Wildlife Center, Savannah Wildlife Rescue, The Humane Society for Greater Savannah, The Georgia Police K9 Foundation, and Hugaroo, Inc. During his last donation drive, he raised 250 brand new stuffed animals for kids in the hospital!
Among his many personal achievements, Rocky was named “The South’s Greatest Pet” during South Magazine’s 2022 contest, and voted “Best Law Enforcement Officer” during the prestigious “Best of Savannah” Awards! ”
Third Place Winner – Astra, benefiting Let’s be S.M.A.R.T.
Astra was found as a tiny kitten, blind, and alone at a metro stop in Athens Greece. A kind samaritan heard her cries and scooped her up and took her to Let’s Be S.M.A.R.T. cat rescue. She thrived here. I had previously adopted a cat from LBS who had passed away at 17 years old this past March. When I saw Astra’s photo, I had to have her. She is my first blind cat. She has taught me much in the 2 months I had her. She is fearless- not afraid to climb and jump! She’s very social- engages play with her old (both rescues) brother and sister. I named her Astra for the Greek Goddess of Justice, Astraea (known for her innocence, purity and true. And Astra means star. It evokes celestial beauty, aspiration, and brilliance. She is my shining star!
